Understanding Job Duties

One detail that is often glossed over in the search for a job is a clear understanding of the tasks expected. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to interview for a job and then been told that they’re considering me for another job completely! Some employers will even hire someone else on the spot and fill the position before meeting with you.

Needless to say, it makes a huge difference when, where, and how you’re working. If an employer tells you they’re considering you for a position other than the one you applied for, do not be bullied into taking that job instead! Often the other job will offer less pay or less desirable working conditions.

Of course, if you like the other job, then by all means keep your name in for consideration. But it is important to know exactly what your job duties will be before you accept the position. Never assume something to be true unless you’ve heard it directly from the employer or seen it written down.

Keep in mind that some employers are desperate to fill positions fast, and they may unconsciously gloss over some of the disadvantages of a job. Ask as many questions as you need to clarify the position and its expectations. Most interviewers welcome questions, as they indicate interest and attention on your part.

Look over your acceptance letter carefully before signing it. If you don’t, you may, in fact, be signing your life away!
