How to Plan a Nautical Themed Wedding

Shiver my timbers! We’re about to set our anchor at the wedding of the year!

If these phrases send chills down your spine, you may be a candidate for a full-blown nautical inspired wedding. Possibly you’re a sailor, or maybe you just love the sea. Either way, this wedding theme will appeal to your inner sailor perfectly!

There are so many interesting ways to incorporate a nautical vibe into your big day; it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. How do you even get started? Keep your cool; we’ve got some interesting ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

A great place to start is with the save-the-dates and invitations. This is the first level of contact with your guests, and it can serve as a prelude to the big day. You will want to bring in elements of the theme and use your wedding colors, if you’ve chosen them already. Sailboats, seashells and lighthouses are all great icons to use for a nautical themed wedding. You’ll want elements that remind you of the sea; but keep in mind: these things will be carried through the event theme; so, select wisely. You’ll want to select colors that naturally have a nautical feeling: combinations of white, blue, and red tend to work well.

You can truly get creative with the wedding venue for a nautical wedding. Surely, a yacht would be an ideal match. But, if you don’t have access to a boat, or if you’re distressed about seasick guests, there are other options. A country club by the sea is a great alternative to a wedding at sea.

Forget the overdone ball gown. A practical dress is more appropriate here. Nautical clothing is defined by clean lines and primary colors. Here, the color may not be appropriate, but a classic empire waist or a-line frame would be perfect. Keep things simple. Stay away from too much dazzle. A few pearl accents or Swarovski crystals will go a long way to jazz up your dress, and your theme, nicely.

Before you know it, your guests will be port side, sipping Mai Tai’s and nibbling on coconut shrimp, while they wait for the reception to begin. You enter the room with your better half beaming with pride because you just shared wedding vows with your best mate, and because you know you’ve pulled off your nautical theme perfectly. You’ve covered every detail from the laid-back tunes to the tablescapes decorated in true nautical fashion. You even had the forethought to buy nautical favors, so your guests can have a reminder of your big day for years to come. Whether they walk away with a lighthouse-shaped tea light holder or with a bookmark shaped like an anchor, they will think fondly of you and your special day when they come across their uniquely-nautical wedding favors.

And now it’s time to bid a fond farewell to your guests and set sail for the honeymoon. You’ve definitely earned it!
